HYDERABAD: A 37-year-old cabin crew member of a private airline was allegedly raped by her cab driver while travelling to Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport, Shamshabad, to report for duty on Monday. Based on her complaint, the RGIA outpost police registered a rape case and arrested the accused on Tuesday. He was later remanded in judicial custody. According to police, the incident occurred around 2 pm when the woman was travelling from her residence to the airport in an office cab. Using details provided by her, police identified the accused as a 23-year-old driver from Siddhanti area in Shamshabad and apprehended him shortly thereafter. “We arrested the accused from Shamshabad. During the interrogation, he confessed to committing the offence,” RGIA outpost inspector B Kiran Kumar said. As the vehicle approached the airport, the driver allegedly took a detour through a low traffic stretch, claiming he needed to attend nature’s call. “He was not supposed to take a detour, but since he told the woman that he had to attend a nature’s call, she did not object. He stopped the car near an under-construction international school and got out. A little while later, he suddenly opened the back door and forced himself upon the woman inside the cab,” said an RGIA police official. Police said the accused fled the spot in the cab after the incident, leaving the woman behind, as she raised an alarm. With the help of a worker, she contacted police, who shifted her to Bharosa Centre for counselling. Based on her statement, the RGIA outpost police registered a case under section 64 (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The woman was sent for medical examination on the same day.
