The new system aims to make warnings more relevant to people facing the greatest risk in Canada during thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Canada is changing the way it issues thunderstorm and tornado warnings, introducing a more targeted system designed to tell people whether they are actually in the path of a dangerous storm. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has introduced storm-based warnings that can cover a specific area around a severe thunderstorm or tornado, rather than relying only on larger, predetermined warning zones.

The change is intended to make alerts more precise and reduce unnecessary warnings for people who are far from the immediate threat.

How Canada’s new tornado warning system works

Under the previous system, a warning could cover a large geographic area even when the storm itself was affecting only a smaller portion of it. The new system allows forecasters to create a polygon around the area most likely to be affected by a severe thunderstorm or tornado.

That warning area can then be adjusted as the storm moves. Jonathan Bau, a senior ECCC meteorologist, explained the problem with the previous approach: “What this means that when we’re issuing one of those two warnings, the alert goes out to a larger number of people than perhaps what the immediate danger really represents,”

The new system aims to make warnings more relevant to people facing the greatest risk.

Warnings can change as storms move

The targeted warning doesn't necessarily mean the alert area will always be small. As a storm moves, forecasters can expand the warning area to account for uncertainty about its projected path.

Bau said: “The polygon will increase in to indicate the uncertainty as to the exact path of the storm, and so this widening of the polygon downstream will again cover a larger area of the population,”

This means Canadians can get a clearer picture of where a storm is now and where it could potentially move next.

What about WeatherCAN and emergency alerts?

The updated warnings will be available through the WeatherCAN app, while wireless emergency notifications through Alert Ready can also benefit from the more precise warning areas.

The changes are focused on severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Watches will continue to cover broader predetermined areas. A watch means conditions are favourable for severe weather to develop, while a warning indicates that dangerous weather is occurring or considered highly likely.

Why the change matters

Severe thunderstorms can develop quickly and bring tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain. The federal government says the new system is designed to provide Canadians with more timely and useful information so they can respond when dangerous weather approaches.

Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin said: "Precise and timely summer storm warnings help keep communities safe when facing dangerous weather.”

For Canadians, the biggest difference could be simple: fewer broad alerts and more warnings focused on the communities actually facing the storm.
