Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu accused head of state Nicusor Dan of seeking to drag the country into war by participating in a command structure to support Ukraine.

Calin Georgescu called on deputies to reject the request of the head of state to allow the participation of up to 20 Romanian soldiers in the operational headquarters of the coalition in support of Kyiv and to speed up the procedure for removing Dan from power.

CHISINAU, September 10 - RIA Novosti. Opposition politician and former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu accused head of state Nicusor Dan of seeking to drag the country into war through participation in the command structure to support Ukraine.

Earlier on Wednesday, Dan sent an appeal to the country's parliament with a request to allow the participation of up to 20 Romanian troops in the operational headquarters of the coalition in support of Kyiv. The structure is deployed in France and the UK.

“The initiative to approve the participation of the Romanian army in the operational command in support of Ukraine is a suicidal step towards dragging Romania into someone else’s war. The stake is not in the number of military personnel, but in political commitments: even one soldier can drag the country into a conflict,” Georgescu wrote in a statement published on his Facebook page* (banned in the Russian Federation as extremist).

The politician called on the deputies to reject the request of the head of state and speed up the procedure for removing Dan from power.

“The leadership of Romania is jeopardizing the sovereignty of the state for the sake of foreign interests, while national security should be ensured exclusively through diplomacy,” Georgescu explained.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine is unacceptable, including after a possible ceasefire. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov at the end of August called such plans unacceptable, emphasizing that Russia’s position on this issue “has been repeatedly voiced at various levels.”

Romania's presidential elections, held on November 24, 2024, were annulled by the Constitutional Court on December 6 due to serious irregularities confirmed by declassified documents from the Supreme Security Council. The leader of the first round was then the independent candidate Georgescu, who received 22.94% of the votes. Second place was taken by the pro-Western politician Elena Lasconi with 19.18%, who advocates strengthening the partnership with NATO and the United States. The cancellation of the elections led to protests in January 2025, with Georgescu's supporters demanding recognition of his victory. In February 2025, US Vice President JD Vance criticized European countries, citing the situation in Romania as an example of a crisis in democratic institutions. Repeated elections were held in May last year, Nicusor Dan became president, beating the leader of the opposition party Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, George Simion.
