HD Hyundai designs future LNG ships… Hanwha Ocean, 60MW floating data center

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hong Gyu-bin = HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean announced on the 13th that they will participate in 'Gastech 2026', the world's largest gas exhibition, held in Bangkok, Thailand until the 17th.

At HD Hyundai, five affiliates including HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, and HD Hyundai Electric are participating, and HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun will present a blueprint for the future shipbuilding and shipping industry.

HD Hyundai plans to obtain numerous technical certifications from global shipping companies and sign business agreements (MOUs) with major companies during the exhibition.

Lloyd's Register (LR) has recognized the design suitability of future liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers through drawing evaluation. It is characterized by placing crew quarters at the front of the ship to secure upper deck space and flexibly arranging various wind auxiliary propulsion devices.

In addition, basic certification is received from various classification societies for design technology that replaces the minimum pressure regulations of the 'C type tank' used as a liquefied gas storage tank for medium-sized ships, a 35,000㎥ liquefied carbon dioxide carrier, and a 185,000㎥ hybrid electric propulsion system.

It will also obtain basic certification for an artificial intelligence (AI) solution that helps the optimal operation of LNG carriers, and will jointly develop a digital twin for safety evaluation of ammonia-fueled ships with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Siemens.

Hanwha Ocean is unveiling its self-developed '60 megawatt (MW) floating data center (FDC)' for the first time to respond to the rapidly increasing demand for data centers in the AI ​​era.

Hanwha Ocean emphasized that the floating data center is a new alternative that complements the limitations of land-based data centers, such as securing land and cooling efficiency.

Through modular design, generation and power supply methods, server types, and data center capacity can be flexibly configured according to the environment of the installation area and customer needs.

Hanwha Ocean obtained basic certification (AiP) for the 60MW FDC concept design from ABS.

Hanwha Ocean will also introduce a 174,000㎥ carbon-free LNG carrier model. It is a carbon-free electric propulsion ship based on an ammonia gas turbine, and aims to apply completely carbon-free technology that does not use pilot oil even during the ignition process.
