The Ambitious Cave Where Homer Wrote His Odyssey: Historical Reality or Reflection of Oral Tradition?

Located in the Homer Valley surrounded by olive trees in the Bornova district of Izmir, the cave is one of the areas associated with the famous poet for centuries. Although local narratives claim that the Iliad and Odyssey epics were written here, there is no direct inscription or archaeological find belonging to Homer in the region.

Izmir, known as 'Smyrna' in ancient times, has an important place among the cities that claim to be the birthplace of the poet. However, experts consider the existence of the cave in Bornova as a reflection of the city's deep-rooted cultural heritage and oral tradition rather than a confirmed historical reality.

The most concrete connection of Homer's epics with the lands of Türkiye dates back to the Ancient City of Troy near Çanakkale. While mythological elements and real places are intertwined in the Odyssey epic, Odysseus' journey route is associated not only with Greece but also with the wide geography of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

Homeric geography and ancient epics have become a subject of global curiosity again with director Christopher Nolan's movie 'The Odyssey', which is expected to be released in 2026. With the international interest created by the film, the cave in Bornova and Izmir's historical ties with the ancient poet were once again brought to the top of the agenda.
