Sales of cars, utility vehicles, motorcycles and scooters in the local market surged in strong double-digits last month, as consumer demand remained robust despite global uncertainties due to the West Asia crisis.

As per data available with industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), sales of passenger vehicles rose 27% from a year earlier to 438,854 units in May. Two-wheeler sales increased 31%, while three-wheelers volume grew 14.8%. These are dispatches from manufacturers to dealerships and not retail sales.

"Passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded the highest ever sales of May in 2026," SIAM director-general Rajesh Menon said. He cited a favourable base effect due to weak sales a year earlier, GST rate cuts implemented last September and easier financing options for the strong May sales.

Demand was strong for hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs, senior industry executives said. At Maruti Suzuki, sales expanded across segments, said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales). Sales of mini cars Alto and S-Presso rose nearly two-and-a-half times to 16,275 units from 6,776 units a year earlier. Utility vehicle sales grew 44% to 79,267 units.

In the two-wheeler segment, sales of scooters rose 27% to 739,667 units. Motorcycle sales increased 7% to 1,113,973 units on a high base.
