Iran Claims US Base Attack, US Announces Strikes Amid West Asia Tensions

Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply on Monday as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a US military base, while Washington also announced fresh attacks on Iranian military facilities. The base's location was not specified in the Guards' statement, which was broadcast by IRIB and other Iranian state media. The development came as Kuwait's military said its air defence systems were responding to a drone and missile attack. In a post on X, the Army said, "The Kuwaiti air defenses are currently confronting hostile missile and drone attacks." It added that any explosion sounds heard by residents were the result of air defence systems intercepting the incoming threats and advised people to follow security and safety instructions.

Fresh US strikes in Iran

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said that it carried out self-defence strikes on Iranian radar and command-and-control sites used for drones following what it described as "aggressive Iranian actions." According to CENTCOM, the strikes targeted radar and drone control facilities in Goruk, Iran, and on Qeshm Island. The operation was conducted on Saturday and Sunday (local time) following the reported shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters. CENTCOM said US fighter aircraft responded "swiftly" to the incident, destroying "Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones" that it said posed "clear threats" to vessels transiting regional waters. The command described the operation as "measured and deliberate" and stressed that it was carried out in self-defence. "No American service members were harmed," CENTCOM said, adding that it would continue to safeguard "US assets and interests in response to unwarranted Iranian aggression during the ongoing ceasefire."

Iran's account of the drone incident

Iran has disputed the US account of events. According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the IRGC said its air defence units shot down a US MQ-1 drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial airspace in the early hours of Sunday. The statement said the drone was detected by Iranian surveillance and air defence systems and was subsequently targeted by advanced air defence missiles. Iranian authorities claimed the aircraft was successfully destroyed. The IRGC described the drone as belonging to the US Army and said it was shot down because it entered Iranian airspace with the "intention of carrying out hostile operations."

Earlier exchange of attacks

The latest developments come days after another exchange of attacks between the two sides. The IRGC previously said it targeted an American air base in the region following fresh US strikes on southern Iran. The Iranian missile launch came after the US shot down Iranian drones over the Strait of Hormuz and struck a military site in Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city in southern Iran. According to state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said the attack on the US air base took place in the early hours of Thursday morning and targeted "the source" of earlier US strikes on Iran.

Diplomacy continues amid tensions

The renewed military exchanges have raised concerns about the stability of a fragile ceasefire, even as indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue over a possible agreement to end the three-month-long conflict. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth warned that military action could resume if any agreement fails to meet Washington's requirements. "Our stockpiles are more than suited for that," Hegseth declared during an address in Singapore. President Donald Trump has reportedly sent back a separate proposed agreement with Iran for further revisions. The US President also said he was in "no hurry" to finalise a pact. According to Axios, as cited by CBS News, Trump demanded multiple revisions during a Friday meeting and later sought additional modifications. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged caution over reports surrounding the negotiations, saying, "Until a conclusion is reached... everything that is being said now is speculation." Iranian media reported that diplomatic talks remain underway, with both sides continuing to propose changes to the draft agreement.

Missile infrastructure restored

Meanwhile, Iran has restored access to a significant portion of its underground missile infrastructure following months of excavation and repair work, according to a CNN report. The report said the development highlighted the "limits to US bombing strategy", which had focused on sealing tunnel entrances. The latest military action has heightened fears that the ceasefire could unravel despite ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Qatar and other regional players.
