Iran-US war latest: Trump lands for crucial G7 summit with peace deal already under strain

Israel continued operations in Lebanon despite Iran and Pakistan’s insistence the deal included Lebanon

Donald Trump has landed in Geneva ahead of a crucial G7 summit as his newly announced deal to end the war with Iran is already under strain as Israel announced plans to stay in Lebanon, despite a reported agreement to end the conflict on all fronts.

The US president is set to meet with G7 host Emmanuel Macron in Evian-les-Bains on the Swiss border, who will seek to persuade him to continue supporting Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to help reach a peace agreement.

It comes as Israeli defence minister Israel Katz, whose country is not a party to the US-Iran deal unveiled yesterday, said the military would not withdraw from security zones in southern Lebanon and would retaliate if Iran attacked.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I are leading a clear policy that determines that the IDF will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, without any time limit, to protect, from there, the border and Israeli communities against jihadist elements,” he said in a statement.

Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, a key mediator between Tehran and Washington, said a deal called for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all front, including in Lebanon”.

Switzerland responds to report it wasn't told it would hose Iran-US summit

The Swiss foreign ministry has responded to a report that Switzerland “wasn't told it was hosting Iran-US summit on Friday”.

“Peace and security in the Near and Middle East are a priority of Swiss foreign policy. Switzerland welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and Iran, facilitated by Pakistan with the support of Qatar and other states, as an important step towards de-escalation.

“The FDFA is currently in close contact with the US, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar to facilitate the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding in Switzerland at the end of the week.

“No further details regarding the proceedings or the signing ceremony can be provided at this time.”

Trump has landed in Geneva, according to the Associated Press.

The president did not talk to reporters during the trip across the Atlantic, though he did send off a few social media posts. The first item on his agenda once he gets to Evian-les-Bains is to meet with G7 host Emmanuel Macron.

The French president has said he'll seek to persuade President Trump to continue supporting Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to help reach a peace agreement.

Displaced Lebanese warned against rushing home as Israel vows to continue operations despite 'peace deal'

Authorities in southern Lebanon warned displaced people against rushing home on Monday despite a US-Iran deal to end the wider conflict, as Israel said it would not withdraw troops from the south.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz said the security zone in southern Lebanon would be cleared of local residents, and “all terrorist infrastructure, including houses in contact villages”, in reference to Hezbollah.

Mona Mazeh, a displaced woman sheltering in Beirut's Hamra district, said she had no immediate plans to return to her village near the southern city of Tyre.

“Frankly, we are hesitant; Israel cannot be trusted,” she said.

The Israeli military has been razing villages in southern Lebanon for weeks, saying it is acting against Hezbollah militants embedded in civilian areas of the predominantly Shi'ite Muslim region.

In Nabatieh, a devastated city in the south, Mohammed Daqdouq said he had returned on Monday morning to check on his home.

“We'll need a lifetime to rebuild - to rebuild it again and bring Nabatieh back to how it was,” he said.
