Joe Dean wins British Masters with bogey-free 63, claims first DP World Tour title

Former supermarket delivery driver Joe Dean fired a sensational bogey-free nine-under-par 63 to snatch the British Masters title at The Belfry.

It is a first DP World Tour victory in his 70th event for the 32-year-old Englishman who is ranked 292nd in the world.

He collected the trophy and about £440,000 in prize money, more than he had earned in total from his previous 19 tournaments in the 2026 season.

"All those painful hours and all the work, it's finally led to something," said Dean, who two years ago was delivering groceries to help fund his golf.

"It was a rare day when everything felt right and the putts were dropping and I couldn't do anything wrong."

It caps a busy summer for the Sheffield golfer who won the inaugural Last Chance Qualifier on the Monday of Open Championship week in July to earn the final spot in the field at Royal Birkdale.

He then married Emily, who carried his bag that week and this.

"I can't thank her enough," said Dean on Sky Sports. "I hope I made her proud."

Dean started Sunday's final round seven shots behind leader Dan Hillier and made a move with four birdies in his opening six holes. Five more followed on the back nine, including a 10-footer at the last to set the target at 14 under par.

He then had to wait about 90 minutes to be crowned champion as challengers came and faded.

Dean eventually won by three strokes from four players, including 2023 champion Hillier, at a tournament that was disrupted by stormy conditions in Warwickshire.

More than nine hours of play was lost on Thursday and Friday, leaving organisers scrambling to complete the event before more forecast inclement weather returned.

Marco Penge, who had a breakthrough year in 2025 with three wins, led on 10 under after a sparkling 65 in round two.

He also started the final round on that total after completing a third-round 72 on Sunday morning.

Five birdies and two bogeys in his first nine holes of round four catapulted Penge into a one-stroke lead with nine to play.

However, a third bogey of the round, on the 11th, halted his momentum and five more pars followed to leave him 12 under with two to play.

Penge compounded the error of a wild drive into trees on the par-five 17th by hitting a branch with his second shot and then had to chip out sideways with his third.

That led to a bogey and with his challenge over, he dropped a shot at the last too to finish with a 72 and 10-under total.

A double-bogey six on the sixth hurt Hillier's tilt at winning a second title. And while the New Zealander had two birdies on his back nine, he closed with a one-over 73 to finish on 11 under.

That left him joint second alongside the Danish pair of Niklas Norgaard and Jacob Skov Olesen who both signed for 71s, and Spain's Nacho Elvira who carded a 69.

Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti threatened to trouble Dean's lead late on after firing four birdies in five holes during a purple patch on his back nine to get to 12 under, but he had a triple bogey on the last after taking two shots to get out of a fairway bunker and then finding water.

The British Masters was the first event in the race to qualify for the European team to take on the United States at next year's Ryder Cup in Ireland.
