The youth organization of the Christian Democratic Union (Junge Union) in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt unanimously demanded the resignation of the entire regional leadership of the party due to failure in the Landtag elections, ZDF TV channel reported, citing the organization's resolution.

On Sunday, Saxony-Anhalt held elections to the regional parliament (Landtag) with the participation of 16 political parties and 398 candidates. According to exit poll data from the sociological institute Infratest Dimap for the ARD television channel, the opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is leading the elections with 44.5%, while the ruling party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is gaining only 18.5%.

"Responsibility for this result lies with the entire leadership of the party. Therefore, a convincing new start is only possible if the CDU of Saxony-Anhalt completely renews its leadership - this is the basis for restoring trust and authority," the organization said in its resolution.

The current CDU Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze, admitted on Sunday that his party was defeated in the elections to the regional parliament.
