Hotel Fire in Kolkata: 9 People Lost Their Lives

A fire broke out on the second floor of a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state of India, at around 02.50 for an unknown reason. The flames growing in a short time and the dense smoke covering the building caused panic in the hotel. The fire was taken under control and extinguished with the intervention of the fire brigade and search and rescue teams who were dispatched to the region upon notice. While approximately 80 people were evacuated from the hotel, it was reported that 9 people, including 2 women and 1 child, died in the fire and many people were injured. In the statement made by the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that 5 of those who lost their lives were Bangladeshi citizens and 4 of these people were from the same family. It was noted that 6 injured Bangladeshis who were in Kolkata for health treatment were discharged after their first aid at the hospital. While investigations are continuing in the region, preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. It was noted that a large-scale investigation was launched with a team of 5 people regarding the incident.
