Cabo Verde's first ever World Cup goal.

One of the goals of the tournament!

Uruguay are stunned.

Their wall was a bit dodgy on that free-kick.

All to play for in Group H

D By David Hirst

Uruguay kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.

Cabo Verde, of course, held World Cup heavyweights Spain to a 0-0 draw.

This morning, we saw Spain beat Saudi Arabia 4-0, so they should get the top spot in Group H.

The second place is still up for grabs.

The feel-good story of the World Cup will be back on the field today, when Cabo Verde takes on Uruguay in the second group-stage match for both teams.

And Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha Vozinha —who made some stunning saves against Spain — will have his mother in the stands for that match; she was unable to attend Cabo Verde's stunning opening draw against Spain because she couldn't obtain a visa.

Ana Candida Evora is here now, though, making Cabo Verde's story even better.

"I want to thank all the fans, everyone who helped in the process, for the support you gave to the team, especially to Cabo Verde," Evora said in remarks distributed by FIFA in a video message.

"We're all rooting for Cabo Verde to play well, to shine on the pitch. The players need to have faith, and everything will go well."

Match report: Iran holds Belgium in California

H By Henry Hanson

Reuters

Iran used seven saves from Alireza Beiranvand and a man advantage from a Belgium red card to pull out a 0-0 draw in the second consecutive tie for both teams in World Cup Group G play Sunday afternoon in Inglewood, California.

Beiranvand, 33, earned his second clean sheet in his seventh appearance across three World Cups. He also had six saves in Iran's opening 2-2 draw with New Zealand.

Iran went up a man in the 66th minute when Belgium's Nathan Ngoy was sent off for dragging an Iranian attacker down after a poorly weighted back pass to the keeper presented a goal-scoring opportunity.

Even though Iran played against 10 men for the final 30 minutes of the match, they still had just 32 per cent possession, were outshot 7-3 on target, and out-passed 608-269.

Even down a man, Belgium had the best scoring chance of the remainder of the game, with Beiranvand diving to the ground to stop a shot from Maxim De Cuyper, who had four shots on goal, in the 86th minute.

The second consecutive draw leaves both Belgium and Iran on two points through two Group G matches. While each would still advance with a win on the final matchday on June 26, it leaves the door open for either New Zealand or Egypt to move to the top of the table should either win Sunday night's matchup in Vancouver.

Belgium face New Zealand in Vancouver on the final day of Group G play, while Iran simultaneously faces Egypt in Seattle.

Full-time stats

H By Henry Hanson

Belgium was unable to make the most of its territorial dominance in Inglewood.

The Red Devils finish with 1.82 xG compared with the 0.63 conjured by Team Melli.

FT: Belgium 0 - 0 Iran

H By Henry Hanson

A mighty defensive display earns Iran a point against Belgium, with Team Melli shot stopper Alireza Beiranvand adding to the slew of brilliant goalkeeping performances we've seen in North America.

Beiranvand's finest moment came midway through the second period, when he got down to deny Belgian fullback Maxim De Cuyper from point-blank range.

The wind was well and truly taken out of Belgium's sails not long after that Beiranvand intervention, when defender Nathan Ngoy saw red for a last man challenge on Mehdi Taremi.

However, Iran was unable to ram home its man-advantage as the game made its way to an entertaining scoreless draw.

It's far from a disastrous result for either team and both will remain confident of progression from Group G.

90+5' Was that the chance!?

H By Henry Hanson

Dodi Lukébakio is in possession on the edge of the penalty area, and does well to glide infield and manufacture some room for a left-footed curler.

The ball flies just wide of the post and that should be that in LA.

90+2' Belgium pushing forward

H By Henry Hanson

It's Iran with the man advantage, but it's Belgium flooding forward as we move deep into stoppage time.

There's an opening for substitute Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who opens up and lets fly from range.

It's well wide.

90' We're into five minutes of added time

H By Henry Hanson

89' Some showboating from the Iranian GK

H By Henry Hanson

Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand has played wonderfully today, but he's surely tempting fate here.

Belgium plays a ball over the top, Beiranvand charges out of his penalty area, controls the ball with his chest and breezes his way through a couple Belgian bodies before getting his pass away.

Open Questions

  • Will Cabo Verde advance from Group H?
  • Can Iran secure a win in their final group match?
