What a shot from Messi from outside the box to give Argentina the early lead. Luca Zidane got a hand to it, but all he could do was help palm it into the back of the net.

Many would have thought this would be a cakewalk for Argentina, and they have certainly shown their attacking threat.

However, Algeria is showing its threat in transition moments going forward.

Pulisic 'day to day' ahead of crucial Socceroos-USA clash

Christian Pulisic once again worked off to the side during the open portion of the team's Tuesday's practice and remains day-to-day with a left calf injury ahead of Friday's second game of Group D play against the Socceroos in Seattle.

Pulisic, who recorded an assist and was the key player in the setup to an own goal in the USMNT's 4-1 defeat of Paraguay on June 12, was subbed out of the opener at halftime after he was kicked in the calf.

He did not get any work on the field during the 15-minute portion of Tuesday's practice which media members were allowed to observe.

"I just got a bit of a kick first half, so I'm really hoping that it's nothing," Pulisic said after the Paraguay match.

"Taking a little bit of precaution, but I'm hoping I'll be fine the next few days.

"[It's] Just the back of my leg, my calf area. But I've had similar things before, and I'm staying positive. I don't think it's anything at all."

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino simply said Pulisic was "Good," when asked for an update on his status Monday.

US forward Tim Weah said on Tuesday that he expects Pulisic to play.

"He looks normal, he's fit," Weah said.

"He works with the trainers on the side, but I think he'll be ready for the game."

Tropical cyclone could dampen Portugal opener

Cristiano Ronaldo's bow at this year's World Cup could be a damp one, warns the US National Hurricane Center.

Potential heavy rain is forecast for the match between Portugal and DR Congo set to be played in Houston on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) as potential Tropical Cyclone One formed off the Texas coast

The US National Hurricane Center issued a warning of heavy rainfall and dangerous flash flooding along the energy corridor that includes major offshore drilling and refining assets.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 101 counties in the state.

The potential tropical cyclone — about 105km south-west of Corpus Christi — would take the name Arthur if it strengthens and becomes the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

The storm system is expected to bring 10-20cm of rainfall — with isolated higher totals around 30cm — through to Thursday along the Texas coast.

"The disturbance should move offshore the Texas coast tonight or early Wednesday, move roughly parallel to the upper Texas coast later on Wednesday and move back inland in extreme eastern Texas or southwestern Louisiana late Wednesday or early Thursday," the NHC said.

Kiwi viral sensation Tim Payne heading to Paraguay

New Zealand defender Tim Payne, who became a viral sensation shortly before representing his country at the World Cup, has signed a one-year deal with Paraguayan club Olimpia, a club source told Reuters.

Payne will join the historic South American side after New Zealand's campaign at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Sky Sports first reported.

Olimpia fuelled speculation on Monday when it posted a message on Instagram featuring a New Zealand flag and a flexed-biceps emoji minutes before New Zealand's Group G opener against Iran, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The source confirmed the agreement was in place but did not provide further details.

The Wellington Phoenix defender shot to global prominence after an Argentine influencer launched a social media campaign describing him as the least-known player at the World Cup and encouraging fans to follow him online.

Payne's Instagram following grew from fewer than 5,000 before the campaign to around 5.8 million, turning the 32-year-old into one of the tournament's most unlikely viral stars.

As good a story as it is for Payne, one must feel sorry for many of the other lesser-known players at the World Cup, including his teammate Tommy Smith.

While Payne has the honour of playing in the top tier A-League, Smith's Braintree Town were just relegated to the National League South, England's sixth tier.

Olimpia, Paraguay's only three-time Copa Libertadores champions, qualified for the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana as winners of Group G and also secured a place in next year's Libertadores after winning the domestic Apertura title.

Argentina's bid to become the first back-to-back World Cup champions in 62 years begins today.

The match against Algeria in Kansas City also marks the start of the sixth and possibly final World Cup for Lionel Messi.

One of the best players of a generation turns 39 later this month and is widely expected to retire from international competition following this year's tournament.

FT: Haaland scores twice as Norway beat Iraq 4-1

Erling Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut as Norway beat Graham Arnold's Iraq 4-1 in Boston.

Haaland slid in at the far post after a cross from the left to put Norway in front on 28 minutes.

Iraq levelled on 38 minutes when Aymen Hussein rose to power home a header after a cross from the left.

But disaster struck for Iraq when Jalal Hassan's clearance smashed off the onrushing Haaland's foot and flew into the net.

Substitute Leo Ostigard headed home the third from a corner on 75 minutes.

In the final seconds, Kristian Thorstvedt bundled the ball home after Haaland headed across goal.

It's 4-1!
