Lufthansa to Shut Down CityLine Subsidiary Amid Fuel Crisis and Strikes

German airline group cites doubling of kerosene prices and five consecutive days of walkouts as reasons for accelerating strategic restructuring

Quick Look

  • Lufthansa Group announced Thursday it will permanently shut down its CityLine regional subsidiary, removing 27 aircraft from service starting April 21.
  • The closure comes after kerosene prices more than doubled since the Middle East war began, compounded by five consecutive days of cabin crew and pilot strikes this week.
  • Approximately 2,000 CityLine employees will be offered positions at other Lufthansa subsidiaries.

AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

Lufthansa CityLine was a regional subsidiary operating 27 aircraft with approximately 2,000 employees. The closure is part of Lufthansa's broader strategic restructuring to consolidate short- and medium-haul operations under the main brand and improve competitiveness amid rising costs.

German airline group Lufthansa said on Thursday that it will shut down its CityLine regional subsidiary, saying higher jet fuel prices and a series of labour strikes had forced an acceleration of its strategic plans. "As a first, immediately effective step, the 27 operational aircraft of Lufthansa CityLine will be permanently removed from the flight programme starting the day after tomorrow, in order to reduce further losses at the loss-making airline," the group said. CityLine has approximately 2,000 employees, who have been offered continued employment in other subsidiaries, Lufthansa added. Kerosene prices have more than doubled since the outbreak of the Middle East war, the company said. On top of the fuel crisis, Lufthansa has faced regular strike actions, including five consecutive days of walkouts this week by cabin crew and pilots. The International Energy Agency has also highlighted pressure on fuel supplies. Its Executive Director, Fatih Birol said Europe has "maybe six weeks or so of jet fuel left" and warned of possible flight cancellations "soon" if oil supplies remain disrupted by the Iran war. Services on long-haul and short-haul routes across the rest of Lufthansa's network will be reduced after the summer to cut costs, the group said. "The goal is to focus our short- and medium-haul platforms more clearly and make them more competitive," said Till Streichert, chief financial officer of Lufthansa Group. Long-haul capacity will be reduced by "a total of six intercontinental aircraft at the end of the summer flight schedule," it said in a statement. In the winter 2026/27 schedule, Lufthansa plans further cuts. It will remove five aircraft from the Lufthansa fleet across six destinations, affecting the number of flights operated under the main Lufthansa brand on short- and medium-haul routes. Lufthansa's share price was down by more than 3.5% on Thursday afternoon in Frankfurt.

Morocco's Olive Oil Exports to Spain Surge by Nearly 10,000%

Morocco's olive oil exports to Spain saw a dramatic 9,979% increase between early 2025 and early 2026, rising from 103 tonnes to over 10,000 tonnes. This surge, driven by a strong Moroccan harvest and preferential EU trade terms, reversed the trade balance, with Spain now importing more than it exports to Morocco. Despite the jump, Moroccan oil still represents a small fraction of Spain's total imports and domestic production.
