Lula calls for transparency from the Brazilian Supreme Court in the Banco Master scandal

The president of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that "no one, in the name of democracy, can use the office he holds for his own benefit", confirming the government's intransigent line, announced yesterday in a speech to the nation, with respect to the serious institutional crisis that has involved the Supreme Court in the context of the investigation into the Banco Master crack. Several members of the High Court are suspected of having received bribes and favours, together with dozens of politicians and high state officials, from the banker Daniel Vorcaro, currently in prison on fraud charges. Speaking during an event at the Planalto Palace, in Brasilia, the president also underlined that "everyone must be subjected to the same procedures established by law", because "it applies to everyone", and asked the President of the Supreme Court Edson Fachin to guarantee transparency and "not try to hide absolutely anything" to restore tranquility to Brazilian society.

Lula announced his intention to promote, in 2027 and in the event of re-election, "a profound discussion on the need for a new reform of the Brazilian judiciary", with the aim of strengthening citizens' trust in justice.
