A man who filmed inside the shipping container where Dezi Freeman had been living prior to his death has been charged with trespass.

Police allege the man entered the Thologolong property in Victoria's north-east in April, about three weeks after Freeman was shot dead following a stand-off with police.

The 43-year-old Yea man later published footage filmed inside the shipping container and around the property online, saying he had accessed the site to retrieve a drone.

In a video posted online on Sunday morning, the man said police had been "looking for him" and he had to "hand himself in".

He said he had since been charged.

Victoria Police said the 43-year-old Yea man was charged by Wodonga crime investigation unit detectives with one count of trespass in relation to an alleged incident at a property on Murray River Road in Thologolong on April 16.

The man is due to appear at Wodonga Magistrates' Court in October.

Freeman was shot dead by police on March 30 at the remote property on the New South Wales–Victoria border, after more than seven months on the run.

He had been hiding in a converted shipping container after fatally shooting two police officers at a Porepunkah property in August last year.

The footage of the Thologolong property showed the inside of the container, including clothing, personal items, bedding, batteries, a radio and containers of vitamins.

It has not been confirmed if any of the items belonged to Freeman.

The video also showed the conditions inside the container, with one person describing a strong chemical smell and saying they were having difficulty breathing.

Police used non-lethal baton rounds and tear gas during the 3-hour stand-off with Freeman.

Open Questions

  • Did the items found in the container belong to Freeman?
  • What was the motive for trespassing?
