Democrats and Republicans Name Their Candidates in Minnesota Primary Elections

As the Congressional midterm elections to be held on November 3, 2026 are approaching, Ilhan Omar won the Democratic nomination by receiving over 80 percent of the votes in the primary election in the 5th electoral district of Minnesota. At the same time, in the Senate primary, Peggy Flanagan won as a progressive, defeating her centrist Democratic opponent.

Ilhan Omar, representing the 5th electoral district based in Minneapolis, is one step closer to becoming a member of the House of Representatives for the fifth term. John Nagel, who won the Republican Party primary, will be Omar's opponent on November 3.

In the primaries for the Senate election in Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan, who is currently serving as Lieutenant Governor, won the Democratic primary. Flanagan defeated centrist Democratic challenger Angie Craig on promises to fight corporate influence and oppose Republican President Donald Trump. "I've been telling you for months that this campaign is a fight between the people and the money. So what happened? The people won," he said while celebrating his victory in Minneapolis.

Flanagan's win was interpreted as a new result showing that progressive segments among Democratic voters are gaining strength. This result, which followed the progressive candidate Abdul El Sayed's victory in the primaries held in Michigan last week, was seen as a continuation of the trend.
