More than 50 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings die after artificial lighting lures them onto Florida road

Why It Matters

Artificial lighting disorients sea turtle hatchlings, which naturally rely on the reflection of the night sky on the ocean to find the water.

More than 50 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings died overnight on Florida’s Anna Maria Island after artificial lighting disoriented the newborns and lured them toward a coastal road rather than the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials discovered 55 dead hatchlings, only hours old, on Gulf Drive. Artificial lighting emanating from surrounding businesses and homes directed the turtles away from the natural glow of the ocean horizon.

Kristen Mazzarella, Executive Director of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring, told local NBC affiliate WFLA that she had never encountered that high of a mortality count in her 28 years with the organization.

Audrey Phillips, a tourist visiting from Indiana, told the outlet that she had come across one of the hatchlings in the morning.

“I thought it had a little bit of life in it, but it had passed,” Phillips said, adding that she had no prior knowledge that lighting could alter a turtle’s direction.

In a statement posted to social media, Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring issued a “Rainbow Bridge Alert” confirming the event.

“These baby turtles were only hours old and instead of following the light of the night sky reflecting on the water,” the statement read, “they crawled towards artificial light shining from homes and businesses, straight into the road.”

The organization appealed directly to property owners, renters and tourists to inspect coastal properties for visible light pollution, close indoor blinds after dark and turn off non-essential lights to shield remaining nests. Organizers urged the public to contact its 24-hour hotline at (941) 301-8434 upon encountering any disoriented hatchlings, whether dead or alive.

Mazzarella noted that prevention depended on nighttime behavior, emphasizing that residents should avoid using fixtures outside the amber or red light spectrum.

“People are warned every single year about leaving lights on at night,” local resident Sellitto Joe Sellitto told WFLA . “The turtles are going to follow the light, so it’s sad that we lose them.”

The incident prompted strong reactions online, with several residents and visitors calling for stricter municipal enforcement and financial penalties.

Commenting on Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring’s announcement, social media user Jennifer Hogan questioned why municipalities did not mandate yellow outdoor bulbs.

“Why don’t the towns have requirements to use yellow lightbulbs outside?” Hogan wrote. “When we went Vero Beach for the first time we thought the yellow lights everywhere were odd but then found out why they used them. It’s a simple fix and easy/obvious to enforce.”

Others advocated for direct regulatory enforcement.

“You need to start fining these people that have their lights on,” Sandy Ziros wrote on Facebook. “Everyone knows to keep your lights off.”

Commenter Susie Schulz suggested mailing warning letters to all coastal addresses and having strict fines for non-compliance.

“Everybody needs to get a letter that lives along the coast telling them to not have their lights on and fining them if they do,” Schulz said. “It would be my guess that a lot of people don't know this.”

Open Questions

  • ?Will local authorities implement mandatory lighting regulations?
  • ?How many total nests remain vulnerable in the area?
