Mudslide in Jiangxi province kills one, 10 still missing after cyclone Saudel

Rescuers in southeastern China's Jiangxi province found one of the people missing after a mudslide triggered by torrential rain from tropical cyclone Saudel, state broadcaster CCTV reported Sunday. However, the person was found dead, bringing the death toll to two and leaving 10 people still missing. The mudslide struck a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, early Saturday, prompting rescuers to evacuate residents to safer areas, authorities said. One person pulled from the debris was found dead, while two others were rescued alive and in good condition. Typhoon Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang province on August 28 before making a third as a tropical storm in neighbouring Fujian province on Thursday, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. In Fujian, several people remained unaccounted for after days of heavy rain, while more than 100 houses collapsed in Huating Town in Putian city, Xinhua reported. A dike overflowed and breached on Thursday afternoon, flooding villages and trapping residents. About 600,000 people had been evacuated from high-risk coastal and offshore areas in Fujian by Friday night, Xinhua said. Images from state broadcaster CCTV showed flooded streets, with rescuers using inflatable boats to reach affected residents.(With AP inputs)
