New heat wave localized in the south of France from Wednesday

A new episode of heatwave returns to France from Wednesday September 3. But contrary to what we have experienced in recent months, the phenomenon will not affect the whole of France this time.

The extreme heat is not widespread, but really affects the south of the Garonne: the Midi of Toulouse, Languedoc-Roussillon, the Mediterranean rim and the Rhône valley. The Aquitaine coast is spared, it is rather inland that the high temperatures are concentrated. In the South, it has already been very hot in recent days, sometimes to the point of disrupting the start of the school year. But from Wednesday, temperatures are expected to break records - up to 37 or 38 degrees in Languedoc, in particular - and reach scorching levels, according to Météo-France forecasts.

The change from the start of the week is that it will also be warm at night. This is why we can describe the episode as “scorching”. The readings attest to this from Wednesday morning in Montpellier: at daybreak, we still reach the heatwave threshold which is set at 22 degrees. And these high temperatures should last until Monday or Tuesday, if the forecasts are confirmed because we have an anticyclone which is moving, unlike the heat dome which was really fixed.

Not the same phenomenon as in July-August

Even if it is a heatwave, this time we cannot speak of a "heat wave" because the phenomenon is not widespread across the entire country, it is less spread out. However, several departments have been placed on yellow alert around the Mediterranean and in the lower Rhône valley. This is the first level but several other departments could be affected by orange vigilance in the coming hours.

From Tuesday or Wednesday, Météo-France initially forecasts thunderstorms, certainly located around the mountains. But above all, a rainy episode is finally expected over a large part of the country and will bring down these temperatures.
