One person has been killed and six others injured following an explosion at a petroleum product storage facility in the Dutch port of Rotterdam on Thursday, local officials said, as police investigate the cause of the blast.

A spokesperson for the energy commodities trading company Gunvor said an "incident" occurred during routine maintenance work on one of its storage tanks. Police confirmed there was no immediate evidence of sabotage and that all possible scenarios were being investigated.

The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and acts as a primary hub for crude oil and fuel imports and storage. It hosts Europe’s largest oil refinery — Shell’s 404,000-barrel-per-day Pernis plant — as well as other major facilities run by BP, ExxonMobil, and Vitol.

The explosion took place at around 11:30am (0930 GMT).

Gunvor confirmed it was cooperating with local authorities.

Shell stated that its operations at the port remained unaffected by the blast.

A Rotterdam Port spokesperson confirmed LNG terminals were unaffected. Figures from European gas transmission group ENTSOG indicated a temporary drop in output from Rotterdam's Gate LNG terminal before flows became volatile. It was unclear if this was a direct result of the explosion or a separate power outage elsewhere across the sprawling port complex.

Traders are expected to closely monitor any prolonged disruption, as Gate is one of northwest Europe's vital LNG import hubs, with Dutch gas storage capacity currently standing at around 40 per cent ahead of the winter heating season, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe data.

ExxonMobil said the power failure had been resolved and that operations were normal at its 191,000-barrel-per-day refinery, declining to verify an alert from Wood Mackenzie seen by Reuters that all monitored units had shut down.

Rotterdam Port said there was no link between the blast and the power outages. The local safety authority confirmed the port had experienced several power cuts earlier in the day, but none were connected to the explosion.
