Óscar Puente authorizes the installation of tents for migrants in the port of Ceuta

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, signed an order this Saturday to assume control of the port of Ceuta and authorize the installation of temporary reception tents for migrants in the Poniente dock area.

The measure, adopted under article 73.3 of the Law on State Ports and the Merchant Navy, will allow an area of ​​16,000 square meters of public port domain to be set up to install tents with capacity for more than 1,000 immigrants.

The purpose of the request to occupy these lands is to temporarily enable the necessary spaces so that the General Directorate of Humanitarian Care and the International Protection Reception System can carry out the functions legally attributed to it, according to the order signed by Puente.

The occupation includes the provisional installation of tents and other spaces for rest areas, infirmary and dispensary, as well as areas for social care and intervention and health services. Offices will also be set up for the personnel of the entity in charge of providing the service and a booth for security tasks.

The decision responds to the "exceptional nature of the situation in Ceuta", and, given this scenario, the Ministry of Transport has assumed command and decided to respond to the request made by the Secretary of State for Migration, authorizing the use of a part of the port's service area that is already open to the city.
