A police officer who was injured in an alleged stabbing in Adelaide's northern suburbs this week has been discharged from hospital amid "many messages of support".

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said a man allegedly "rushed at police with a large knife" before he was shot in the leg by a male officer at Elizabeth East on Wednesday.

He said the man continued to charge forward and allegedly "managed to stab a senior constable in the neck".

The 27-year-old Woodville Gardens man faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court via phone on several charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault, and was remanded in custody until a further hearing in November.

Commissioner Stevens praised senior constable "Jessie" and her police partner for showing "significant courage".

In a statement on Saturday, police confirmed the injured officer had left the hospital and would be focusing on her recovery.

"Jessie is recovering well and will continue to receive our full support during her recovery," police said.

"We thank all the medical staff from SA Ambulance and the Royal Adelaide Hospital involved in Jessie's care and acknowledge the many messages of support received from her policing colleagues and the community."

The incident on Wednesday is now the subject of a major crime investigation and a Police Commissioner's Inquiry.
