President Lee Calls for 'All-Out War' Against Crimes Targeting Vulnerable Groups

SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday called for an "all-out war" against crimes targeting socially vulnerable groups, including youths and women, following the recent fatal stabbing of a female high school student. Last week, a 17-year-old female high school student was stabbed to death in a random attack by a stranger on a street in the southwestern city of Gwangju, while another 17-year-old male student nearby was also injured. "I offer my condolences for the deceased student and my deepest sympathies to the bereaved family," Lee said during a meeting with senior presidential aides at Cheong Wa Dae, while also wishing a speedy recovery for the injured student. Lee called for intensified special police activities in areas considered vulnerable to crime until public anxiety eases, and urged stern punishment for online secondary victimization targeting victims. Police released the mug shot and personal information of the suspect, 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, and referred the case to prosecutors following his arrest on charges of murder and attempted murder.
