The Putin administration has deepened its reliance on China, a friendly nation, as the "special military operation" in Ukraine continues to drag on. Even as signs of economic and social instability emerge within Russia, the government shows no sign of changing its stance on continuing the conflict, making the maintenance and strengthening of relations with China appear essential.

Putin Appeals for "Honeymoon" Period

"Russia-China relations have now reached an unprecedented level. This is characterized by mutual support on issues concerning the fundamental interests of both countries," Putin emphasized the honeymoon period between the two nations in a video message to the Chinese people before his visit to China.

Since the start of the special military operation in February 2022, China's support, such as its large-scale purchase of Russian oil, has been a lifeline for Russia's economy, which is subject to Western sanctions. Diplomatically, by demonstrating that China is an "ally," it has become easier to counter Western powers.

Fyodor Lukyanov, a foreign affairs commentator close to the Putin administration, praised the relationship in an article for the government newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, stating, "While Russia's and China's interests do not always align, the two countries have built a solid relationship of trust."
