At least one person has died in severe storms in several federal states. In Waldorf in Rhineland-Palatinate, a woman was hit by a falling tree and fatally injured. Another woman suffered serious injuries, police said.

The two women, aged 58 and 47, had sought protection under a covered seating area when a nearby tree was uprooted and fell onto the seating area. The 58-year-old died at the scene of the accident and the 47-year-old was taken to hospital.

Torn out house walls

According to the police, the storm caused some significant damage. The Westerwald district was particularly affected. Buildings were damaged and trees fell. There were also local power outages and traffic disruptions. According to the Westerwald district, a firefighter was injured by an electric shock.

Tornadoes in Brandenburg and Hesse

In the evening, a tornado caused severe damage in Fürstenwalde, Brandenburg. According to information from rbb, three people were slightly injured. The storm covered the roof of a daycare center and uprooted numerous trees. Parts of the roof flew up to 600 meters. In one photo, a tree trunk can be seen sticking out of the ceiling in the kitchen of a residential building.

There was also a tornado in Hesse. In Solms in the Lahn-Dill district, entire roof trusses were lifted - some houses were uninhabitable, the police said. In Laubach near Gießen, a falling tree damaged a gas tank in a residential building. Because gas was leaking, the area within a 200 meter radius was cleared.

According to the fire department, the storm damaged around 60 houses in Wetzlar, Hesse. The damage ranges from individual missing roof tiles to a complete roof covering. In some cases, parts of the roof flew up to 100 meters.

Weather-related operations also in Bavaria and Thuringia

In Kronach, Bavaria, a shooting festival was partially evacuated late in the evening. Around 3,500 guests had to leave the outside area of ​​the festival grounds. The storm also caused serious damage in Lower Franconia. A parked caravan was hit by a tree. However, according to the information, no one was injured.

In Thuringia, the police counted around 20 weather-related operations. The south of the state is particularly affected. Several trees were uprooted and cellars were flooded.
