Texas Floods Claim Third Life, Hundreds Rescued Amid Widespread Damage

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has confirmed a third fatality from the catastrophic floods that have ravaged the state this month, prompting hundreds of rescues and leaving widespread damage. The latest victim was swept away on Monday while attempting to drive through floodwaters, according to Abbott. The severe weather has necessitated more than 500 rescues, damaged numerous homes and businesses, and continues to render some areas inaccessible. Governor Abbott traveled to Cotulla, located approximately 90 miles southwest of San Antonio, for an aerial assessment of the damage. He noted that parts of the city remain unreachable due to the high waters. The Nueces River, which reached a major flood stage of 29 feet (8.8 meters), has now crested and is expected to recede. However, areas further downstream, particularly around the Lake Corpus Christi reservoir, are anticipated to experience rising water levels into early August, Abbott warned. He urged vigilance, stating, "Anyone living, working, commuting or just walking around areas downstream of the Nueces ... needs to be aware of possible dangers." Central Texas endured several days of heavy rainfall last week. While Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall on Thursday, state officials have not reported any new instances of flooded homes or businesses directly attributable to that storm. The governor has already issued a disaster declaration for 59 counties and has sought federal disaster assistance for 33 counties.
