A Toronto police officer was shot and killed Thursday by a suspect linked to an attack at a U.S. Consulate, police say.
In March, two people emerged from a white Honda SUV at around 4:30 a.m. and fired multiple shots at the U.S. Consulate building in Toronto then sped off.
The shooting damaged the outside of the building but did not cause any injuries.
A 43-year-old Toronto police constable was investigating several shootings around the Greater Toronto Area, including the U.S. consulate attack, when he was shot and killed early Thursday, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said.
Police were carrying out a search warrant at a residential building at around 5:42 a.m. when an "exchange of gunfire" broke out.
One suspect was in custody at a hospital as officers searched for a second suspect, according to Demkiw.
"There's a very heavy sorrow in our community right now," he said at an emotional news conference.
He identified the officer as Const. Marc Pinizzotto, who had served with the Toronto Police Service for 18 years.
"No words can capture the impact on Marc's family, who expected him to come home today," Demkiw said. "We are doing everything we can to support them at this difficult time."
The consulate attack in March followed heightened tensions over the war launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran in late February, and it had followed gunfire attacks on two Toronto-area synagogues the previous weekend.
