Trump's lengthy handshake with Brigitte Macron at G7 summit draws attention

President Trump gave one of his infamous long handshakes to Brigitte Macron while greeting France’s First Lady at the G7 summit.

Trump, who has openly mocked Ms Macron’s relationship with French president Emmanuel Macron, only shook the latter’s hand briefly as they met at the international forum in France this week.

By contrast, Trump clasped Ms Macron’s hand for a full 13 seconds after a customary kiss on each cheek. President Macron, meanwhile, placed his hand on Trump’s back.

After posing for a picture with the French presidential couple, Trump took Ms Macron’s hand once again as he spoke to the pair.

One X user described the gesture as Trump’s “weird handshake tug of war.”

Trump is infamous for his lengthy and forceful handshakes, with one particularly long exchange with President Macron dragging on for almost 30 seconds during a visit to France in 2017.

The greeting unfolded after the pair watched the Bastille Day military parade with Ms Macron and First Lady Melania Trump.

During a NATO summit that same year, Trump appeared to twist President Macron’s arm and grabbed it hard enough to jerk him to the side.

Their latest meeting came after Trump openly mocked President Macron’s reported marriage woes in April, referencing a video in which the French First Lady appeared to push her husband’s face before disembarking from a plane in Vietnam.

“I call up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly,” Trump said at the time. “Still recovering from the right to the jaw.”

​The French president later insisted that he and his wife had been “joking” and described Trump’s remarks as “neither elegant nor up to standard.”

​Speaking to reporters, he said that the pair were simply “squabbling.”

“I’m surprised by it; it turns into some kind of global catastrophe where people are even coming up with theories to explain it,” he said.
