Trump promises every US citizen $5,000 if the Republicans win the election

At the Republican National Convention, US President Donald Trump promised every adult US citizen a $5,000 payment if the Republicans retained control of Congress in the mid-term elections in November. The only condition is that the money must be spent in the United States, he added.

“I’m asking you to act like I’m on the ballot,” Trump said. “Your vote will determine whether our country stumbles at the start of the next 250 years or storms forward and never looks back.”

Trump, who is prone to superlatives and has previously described votes as the most important in US history, emphatically called on his compatriots to vote for the Republicans. In the so-called midterms on November 3rd, around a third of the seats in the Senate will be allocated and the entire House of Representatives will be re-elected. It is usual for the president's party to lose seats. Trump mentioned this in his speech - and was combative: "We will change that."

In his speech, Trump also repeated the false claim that he was cheated out of victory in the 2020 presidential election, to cheers from his supporters. At that time he was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden.
