AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

Ukrainian forces have been increasing long-range drone strikes on Russia, particularly targeting oil infrastructure, as a response to Russia's ongoing war and attacks on Ukrainian cities. Russia has maintained a consistent barrage of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine since February 2022.

Ukrainian forces have carried out a long-range drone strike on a Russian oil refinery, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the military said on Thursday.

Posting on X, Zelenskyy said his forces had struck the Syzran oil refinery in western Russia, sharing video footage showing flames and black smoke billowing from what appeared to be the facility.

"I thank the warriors of the Unmanned Systems Forces and the Special Operations Forces for their precision," Zelenskyy wrote, adding that Kyiv would continue to target Russia's oil refineries.

In a post on Telegram, the Special Operations Forces said they had worked with Ukraine's Security Service to carry out the mission, and that there were reports of a "large fire" at the scene following the attack.

Two people died and several others were injured as a result of the operation, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, the governor of Russia's Samara region, announced.

Ukraine has been ramping up its retaliatory long-range strikes on Russia in recent weeks, particularly targeting oil infrastructure.

Kyiv said on Wednesday that Ukraine had hit another refinery in Kstovo.

Ukrainian forces launched one of their largest drone attacks since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion targeting the Moscow region over the weekend, with the Russian Ministry of Defence reporting that local air defences had intercepted more than 550 drones across the country from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

"Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified," Zelenskyy said at the time.

Moscow has kept up an almost relentless barrage of missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities since it launched its full-out war in February 2022.

A Russian attack earlier this week on the Dnipro region consisted of 524 attack drones and 22 missiles and lasted more than six hours, Zelenskyy previously said, adding that it had targeted residential buildings as well as energy facilities.
