Trilateral summit in El Alamein: Egypt, Cyprus and Greece strengthen cooperation

The Presidents of Egypt and Cyprus, Adel Fattah Al Sisi, Nikos Christodoulidis, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today in El Alamein, on Egypt's northern coast, reaffirming the values of the Tripartite Mechanism established in 2014 and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Egypt and the European Union signed in 2024, with a commitment to peace and mutual support in terms of supply energy and crisis management, from geopolitical tensions to migration.

A permanent secretariat for the trilateral cooperation mechanism will be opened in Nicosia, where the next trilateral summit will be held. A commitment was signed for "continuous consultation and coordination" between the three countries, and to "resolve disputes and crises through political and diplomatic means".

With these premises, the "Cyprus issue" was discussed, on which "support was expressed for the ongoing efforts to reach a global solution within the United Nations because "achieving a solution would significantly contribute to strengthening regional peace and stability". Agreement on the Palestinian issue, with the hope of a lasting peace supported by the two-state solution and that Israel puts an end to the occupation and attacks, including in Lebanon. The national unity of Libya and "the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries".

In terms of energy security, it was agreed to continue the Egypt-Greece Interconnection Project (Gregy), and the connection of Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian infrastructure and plants.

There was also an agreement on water security, which called for "full respect for international law in the Nile basin, also with regard to the Ethiopian dam". Economic, commercial and investment cooperation has been strengthened, to be transformed "into concrete economic opportunities for our peoples". In this context, the desire to cooperate also in the sectors of immigration, work and security was affirmed, encouraging the transfer of qualified Egyptian workers to the two European countries.

The three leaders then presided over the inauguration of the El Alamein International Aerospace Show with a large part dedicated to Defense, reaffirming their commitment to the security of the region.
