WindBorne Systems Raises $37M to Enhance AI-Powered Weather Forecasting for Broader Adoption

WindBorne Systems, a startup leveraging AI for enhanced weather forecasting through novel data collection methods, has secured a $37 million Series B funding round. Led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from Translink Capital, Lux Capital, and previous investors, the round values the company at $250 million.

Founded in 2019, WindBorne utilizes long-flying weather balloons equipped with low-cost sensors to gather data, particularly in hard-to-reach areas like typhoon eyes. This data, combined with global government agency datasets, fuels its proprietary forecasting model. The company operates 20 launch sites worldwide, with approximately 600 balloons airborne at any time.

CEO John Dean highlighted the value of balloon data, stating it improves forecast accuracy more than satellite data. Revenue growth, largely from government clients like the U.S. National Weather Service, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy, has validated market demand for WindBorne’s services.

The new funding will support the development of a mesh radio network to replace satellite communications for the balloon network, enhance compute capabilities, and build a go-to-market team to expand into the private sector. Private sector adoption is anticipated to grow as AI makes integrating weather forecasts into business decisions more efficient and cost-effective, according to Saloni Multani of Galvanize.

Challenges remain, as previous earth-observing startups have struggled to penetrate the private market due to the complexity of extracting value from their data. However, with AI-driven tools, the landscape may shift, making better forecasts more accessible and useful for decision-making across various industries.
