‘We’re remixing her library for a new medium’: the video games capturing the happy-sad spirit of Tove Jansson’s Moomins

Enchanting and a little eerie, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is the second great game in as many years based on the classic children’s booksSleepy, happy-sad, and imbued with the mildest peril, Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories may seem an unlikely fit for the action-heavy medium of video games. Rather than embark on swashbuckling adventures, these milk-white, hippo-esque creatures prefer to potter about Moominvalley, only venturing further if the weather conditions are just right.Yet a small Norwegian video game studio, Hyper Games, is now on its second exquisitely charming Jansson adaptation. The first, 2024’s Snufkin: Melody of Moomin Valley, put players in control of the wily free spirit, Snufkin, as he dismantled overly ordered nature parks (and evaded authority-loving wardens). The latest, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, sees young Moomintroll wake up at night in the dead of winter. With his parents still hibernating, the creature is all alone, thrust into a cold and unfamiliar world. Continue reading...

Nine dollars for a Starbucks is an ‘affordable luxury’? CEOs need to wake up and smell the coffee | Arwa Mahdawi

The head honcho thinks splurging nearly $10 on a beverage during a cost-of-living crisis is fine for a ‘special experience’. It’s time to offer my own valuable adviceI don’t mean to vent, but what is up with Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol’s obscenely large compensation package? Niccol, who joined the company in 2024, is one of the best-paid executives in the US, raking in $96m (£70m) in just his first four months on the job. The man makes 6,666 times more than the company’s typical employee, according to a 2025 Executive Paywatch report. He also regularly commutes to work via private jet. Can’t expect a strategic genius to live next to the office like the rest of the hoi polloi.Still, while he might be good at flogging drinks, Niccol apparently has trouble reading a room. As the cost of living surges, and the federal minimum wage remains at $7.25, the CEO is getting roasted for calling a $9 coffee “a really affordable premium experience”. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Niccol noted that the K-shaped economy, in which higher-income households are thriving and splurging while the bottom half struggles, isn’t really affecting business. Vote Lib Dem or ‘regret it’ living under a Reform council, Davey tells voters

Party leader says vote for Labour or Greens in closely run seats will result in Reform victory at local electionsVoters in the home counties will “regret it for a long time” if they do not back the Liberal Democrats and wake up to a Reform-led council, Ed Davey has said. The Lib Dems leader has identified five councils – East Surrey, West Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and Huntingdonshire – where his party could win overall control, as well as swathes of the former “blue wall” where Davey said it was a “straight fight” between his party and Reform at the English local elections. Liberal Democrats could become biggest party in English local government on 8 May

The Liberal Democrats could emerge as the biggest party in English local government in the 8 May elections, despite polling fifth nationally. The party expects to increase councillor numbers for an unprecedented eighth consecutive local election cycle. Lib Dem strategists are targeting tactical voters opposed to Reform UK, believing around half of voters will block Farage's party. The party is focusing on blue wall areas where they took seats from Conservatives in 2024, while running their biggest-ever digital ad programme attacking Farage's Trump ties.

Carrick's Manchester United Interim Role Sparks Managerial Debate as Season Nears End

Manchester United face a pivotal decision on Michael Carrick's future as interim manager, with the former midfielder having won nine of his 13 matches in charge. While Jamie Carragher insists Carrick will be the next permanent manager, critics point to narrow wins against the run of play and over-reliance on Bruno Fernandes. Owner Jim Ratcliffe's track record of poor decisions adds uncertainty to the season's end choice.

Macron warns Europe must wake up as US, China and Russia all 'dead against' them

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Europeans to defend their own interests, stating that the US, Chinese and Russian presidents are all "dead against" them. Speaking in Athens with Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron said tensions with the US would outlast Donald Trump, calling it a "historical trend." He flew to Athens after an EU meeting in Cyprus, where Greece and France are set to renew a bilateral security pact originally signed in 2021.
