More than 100 gangs are operating nationwide as the growing use of political thugs raises fears of election violence.

A Tanzanian commission of inquiry has confirmed 518 people died from "unnatural causes" following protests after October's general election, in which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 98% of the vote. The commission did not assign responsibility, recommending further investigations, while opposition parties described the report as a "cover-up". Among the dead were 490 men, 21 children and 16 security officers, with 197 killed by shotgun wounds. More than 2,000 people were injured.
