Philippine Military Kills at Least 10 NPA Rebels in Negros Firefights
Philippine military forces killed at least 10 NPA rebels, including local leader Roger Fabillar, during six firefights in Toboso municipality on Negros island on Sunday. As many as 19 rebel deaths are possible according to the Army spokesman. More than 300 residents fled their homes as gunfire rang out in the remote sugar cane-farming region. The NPA, established 57 years ago, is fighting one of the world's longest-running communist insurgencies, with military estimates putting the rebel group at fewer than 2,000 armed members remaining.
