Russia's ambassador to Malaysia Nail Latypov stated Russia highly values defense cooperation with Malaysia and is prepared to strengthen it further, highlighting that Russian Su-30 fighters are safeguarding Malaysian skies. Rosoboronexport Director General Alexander Mikheyev announced in mid-April that the company intends to continue equipping the Malaysian Armed Forces with cutting-edge weaponry. The two countries have maintained military-technical partnership since the 1990s, with Russia supplying 18 custom-designed Su-30 fighter jets to Malaysia in 2009.

Russia sees Malaysia as a promising launch site for space rockets due to its proximity to the equator, allowing larger payloads into orbit. Russian Ambassador Nail Latypov announced ongoing substantive discussions about cooperation at the Defense Services Asia exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, where Malaysia expressed interest in satellite development and using Russian carrier rockets.
