UK by-election in Makerfield becomes national focus amid potential Labour leadership challenge

The traditionally little-known small constituency of Makerfield in North West England has become a national focal point due to the June "most crucial by-election in British history."

The by-election, scheduled for June 18, could lead to the downfall of embattled Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as his most potential challenger seeks to win a seat in Parliament.

Andy Burnham, the current Mayor of Greater Manchester and a senior figure on the Labour left, has not officially announced a challenge to Starmer, but it is widely expected that once he returns to Parliament, he will initiate a contest for the Labour leadership, with the winner becoming the next British Prime Minister.

"Voting for me in this by-election is voting to change the Labour Party," said Burnham, 56, as he officially launched his campaign in his constituency, which lies between Manchester and Liverpool.

In reality, the Labour Party faces a tough challenge. Some voters have decided to support the populist Reform UK party, led by Brexit proponent Nigel Farage, which advocates for anti-immigration policies and made significant gains in the local elections in England this month.

Labour's poor performance in the English local elections, as well as major setbacks in Wales and Scotland, has led to rising dissatisfaction within the party regarding Keir Starmer.

The reason for this by-election is the resignation of the Labour MP for Makerfield, who stated that he hoped to pave the way for Burnham to run and challenge Starmer.

Burnham served as a Labour Member of Parliament from 2001 to 2017, held positions in government, and has twice competed for the party leadership.

The Makerfield constituency has a population of nearly 80,000 and is located in Labour's traditional "red wall" area. It has been a Labour stronghold since 1983, but in the local council elections on May 7, it overwhelmingly supported the Reform UK party.
