林柏廷解釋,男性荷爾蒙中的雙氫睪固酮(DHT)會刺激攝護腺細胞增生,而Equol能與游離DHT結合,比較精準地干擾DHT對攝護腺的刺激。此外,攝護腺內還有被稱為「煞車系統」的雌激素受體ERβ,研究發現Equol對ERβ具有親和力,可能有助抗發炎及抑制細胞過度增生。
