The EU is projected to enter the heating season with its lowest gas reserves in 15 years (76% full by October), driven by a shift away from Russian gas, reliance on expensive US LNG, and global supply disruptions, potentially leading to increased energy costs.
EU gas imports from Russia, including pipeline and LNG, fell 17% to 4.6 bln euro in Jan-Apr 2026. Belgium, France, and Spain were top LNG importers in April. The EU plans a complete ban on Russian gas by late 2027.
Armenia's Public Services Regulatory Commission head, Mesrop Mesropyan, stated the country could theoretically import gas from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, or Iran. This comes as Russia's Foreign Ministry warned Armenia that Moscow might suspend or cancel gas supply agreements if Yerevan continues its EU accession process.

The world passed a significant turning point in 2025 as clean power generation rose faster than global demand for electricity, preventing an increase in fossil fuel generation, according to Ember's annual global electricity review. Global clean power generation increased by 887 TWh while demand rose by 849 TWh. Renewables accounted for 34 per cent of total generation, overtaking coal's 33 per cent share for the first time in a century.
