AI Boom Boosts Incomes and Appeal of South Korean Chip Workers, Making Them Hot Marriage Prospects

The AI boom is helping single employees at Samsung and SK Hynix in South Korea increase their income and appeal, making them attractive marriage candidates.

"Previously, employees of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics were often in the B+ or A- candidate group, but now they are closer to A+. A+ traditionally includes doctors, lawyers, and high-income professionals, as well as those from extremely wealthy families," Son Dong-gyu, CEO of matchmaking company Bien Aller, told Reuters.

"People still prefer traditional professions like doctors, lawyers, and dentists," said matchmaking consultant Lee Sung-mi of Sunoo. "But when introduced to candidates from memory chip maker SK Hynix, clients are also surprised and delighted."

Many matchmaking companies are increasing the "attractiveness score" for chip company employees due to expectations of substantial income from the AI craze. According to Yonhap, Sunoo increased the "partner attractiveness" score for Samsung Electronics employees from 84 to 87. This index assesses marriage suitability based on factors such as socio-economic status, appearance, and family background.

"The partner attractiveness index rarely changes, so a three-point increase is unusual. Samsung Electronics employees are now rated similarly to lawyers, who score 90 points," an employee at Sunoo told Korea JoongAng Daily, adding that many matchmakers feel the actual increase could be up to 10 points.

The index for SK Hynix employees has not been officially adjusted, but it also shows an upward trend. "The rejection rate for matchmaking proposals is decreasing, while the number of successful matches is increasing," said a Sunoo employee.

According to Reuters, the AI craze is changing the global semiconductor industry landscape, transforming memory chips from ordinary commodities into essential components for the infrastructure powering applications like ChatGPT and other advanced AI models. SK Hynix focuses on memory chips, while Samsung produces both logic chips and consumer electronics like smartphones and TVs.

SK Hynix and Samsung are currently the two largest listed companies in South Korea. Samsung has led since 2000, but on June 22, SK Hynix's stock rose 5.6%, increasing its market capitalization to 2.08 trillion won (USD 1.35 trillion), surpassing its rival. Samsung Electronics' stock fell 0.14% at the time, bringing its market capitalization to 2.06 trillion won, though they have since regained the top spot.

Last month, Samsung reached a wage agreement with its union, in which some chip division employees could receive performance bonuses of up to 640 million won (USD 415,000). According to the Financial Times, the annual bonuses for SK Hynix employees could also be comparably high. For comparison, the average income for a South Korean worker in 2024 is 45 million won (USD 29,150).

"Lower-level memory chip employees can receive more money than my department head," a mid-level employee at Samsung shared with the Financial Times.

Park, a worker for SK Hynix's production line, said the status of jobs has changed rapidly. "Two years ago, leaving SK Hynix for Kia's production line made people envious. Now, the situation is reversed," he told Korea Herald.

Professor Lee Hyung-min from the Department of Semiconductor Engineering at Korea University stated that chips are of great importance to the South Korean economy, contributing over 40% of its export value.

Besides impacting the marriage market, the industry's development is also changing educational paths. Some students are aiming for vocational schools, as many positions in chip manufacturing plants only require a high school diploma. "Many friends are envious of me," said Jung Sung-chan, a student at Pyeongtaek Meister High School, after receiving a job offer from Samsung Electronics.

Many career counselors, lecturers, and students also report feeling a change in universities. Park Jun-young, a former Samsung Electronics employee now working as a career consultant, assesses the competition for Samsung and SK Hynix as becoming "fierce."

According to Jongro Academy, the chip engineering program jointly offered by Korea University and SK Hynix since 2021 achieved a record high benchmark score this year. Koo Bon-ho, a first-year student in the program, commented that this is a secure long-term job. "Compared to my friends, I feel quite reassured about my job prospects," Koo said.

"More and more people believe that high salaries and bonuses help semiconductor industry employees build stable lives faster, and jobs in the industry are also considered less likely to be replaced by AI," an employee at matchmaking company Gayeon told Korea JoongAng Daily. This person added that people in the company also frequently mention the boom in the semiconductor industry.

According to matchmaking consultant Lee Sung-mi, the appeal and prosperity of the chip industry are unlikely to diminish in the near future. She said, "Many predict that the semiconductor industry will continue its boom cycle for at least the next two to three years." Therefore, employees working in this field will continue to be among the most sought-after individuals in the marriage market.
