DHARWAD: A 29-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband over dowry demands and repeated taunts about her weight in Hanasi village of Navalgund taluk in Dharwad district. Police have arrested four persons, including the husband, in connection with the murder. The victim has been identified as Priyanka Kamalakar, 29. The prime accused, Basavaraj Waddar, along with three others — Renavva, Subhash and Siddaramesh — has been taken into custody by Navalgund police.

According to police, Priyanka and Basavaraj got married in 2024. While the couple reportedly lived peacefully during the initial months of their marriage, the relationship later deteriorated. The victim’s family alleged that Basavaraj and his relatives subjected Priyanka to continuous physical and mental harassment, demanding additional cash and gold from her parental home.

Police said Basavaraj also repeatedly humiliated his wife over her weight, allegedly telling her that she was “too fat” and incapable of conceiving or bearing a child. The issue frequently led to heated arguments between the couple.

On Monday night, another quarrel allegedly broke out at their residence in Hanasi village. During the altercation, Basavaraj allegedly strangled Priyanka to death. The accused are also suspected of attempting to conceal the crime.

The incident came to light after Priyanka’s family grew suspicious about the circumstances surrounding her death and lodged a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, Navalgund police registered a case under relevant sections of the law on murder and dowry harassment. Following an investigation, police arrested Basavaraj and the three other accused for their alleged involvement in the crime.
