Construction begins on project to restore estuary habitat in South Fork Skagit River
Heavy earth-moving equipment began work in June 2026 on the Island Unit Restoration Project in Skagit County, Washington. Managed by WDFW, the project will remove old sea defenses and breach levees across two islands to restore 270 acres of former farmland to natural intertidal wetlands for endangered Puget Sound Chinook salmon.
