Judd Trump won the Shanghai Masters for the second time, defeating Kyren Wilson 11-6, marking the first major event of the 2026-27 snooker season and collecting £210,000.
World number one Judd Trump beat Kyren Wilson 11-6 to win the Shanghai Masters for the second time.
Trump, 36, led 7-3 after the final's opening session before taking four of the next seven frames to clinch the first big event of the 2026-27 season.
Wilson won the 2025 competition with an 11-9 victory over Ali Carter and moved into an early lead on Sunday. But Trump responded well and took a 4-2 advantage, helped by breaks of 73, 62 and a 67 clearance in the sixth frame to take it on the black having trailed 66-0.
World number seven Wilson pulled one back, but Trump, who also won the tournament in 2024, took three frames in a row to hold a four-frame advantage after the first session.
He stretched that to five by winning the first frame after the restart before Wilson made a break of 103, the first century of the final, to pull it back to 8-4.
Wilson won the next too, but Trump took the 14th frame on the black and the 15th on the pink to move one away from the title.
An excellent clearance of 134 from Wilson kept his hopes alive, but Trump sealed the 17th frame to lift the trophy once again.
"He's beaten me in the last few finals," Trump told the WST website. "It was nice to start the season in that kind of manner and get one over on him. This tournament is amazing. I love coming to Shanghai. It is the first tournament of the year and it is a bit unknown how you are going to play.
"The last time I won Shanghai I had a great season after that. You need to win tournaments like this to test yourself against the best. It was important to get off to a good start. I've done that, I just need to do the rest now."
The Shanghai Masters is a non-ranking event, but one of the most lucrative on the World Snooker Tour (WST), with Trump collecting £210,000 and 34-year-old Wilson £105,000.
The tournament featured 24 players - the top 16 in the world rankings, the next four Chinese players as well as four Chinese wildcards.
It was Trump's first main tournament since a disappointing performance at the World Championship in April when he lost 13-12 to Iranian qualifier Hossein Vafaei in the last 16.
But in China he beat Barry Hawkins, John Higgins and reigning world champion Wu Yize before his victory over Wilson.
The first main ranking tournament of the season begins on Saturday when the China Open returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019.
It will take place in Taiyuan from 8-16 August, replacing the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, which was cancelled after only two years of a 10-year deal.
Trump will begin his campaign next Sunday against Thailand's Noppon Saengkham before Wilson plays his first-round tie against Ireland's Aaron Hill the following day.
