Roundup: Bairstow warms to Yorkshire task in Lyth pairing
Tanya Aldred
A good anoraked crowd came through the chilly Leeds turnstiles for the last Championship game at Headingley before September. They were drawn by a jewel-ladened Yorkshire middle-order of Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow, playing together for the first time this season.
A round of applause warm as a cinnamon bun greeted Root after Matt Revis elaborately left a ball from Jordan Clark that arrowed into his stumps. Root was off the mark with four deftly turned off his boot end, and was just warming up with back-to-back boundaries when he was lbw for 44 to Matthew Fisher, now in Surrey colours but bowling well at his old stomping ground.
Fisher also sent back Brook, who tramped to the crease whirling his bat, but soon plodded back, a twinkled-toed flurry down the pitch ending with a catch behind. A Headingley tut hung in the air. But Bairstow didn’t disappoint and there was a happy sigh for a muscle-flexing six and the hundred partnership with Adam Lyth.
James Rew, fresh from England selection, was back in the middle order for Somerset, and back to form with 86 against Sussex; while Glamorgan’s Ben Kellaway hit a hundred against Warwickshire.
Nineteen-year-old Ben Dawkins shimmied to a maiden first-class century as Kent made the most of a generous Beckenham pitch. Zak Crawley drove Ben Stokes gorgeously down the ground, tried again through the covers and was caught, for 30. At Southampton, Josh Tongue purred towards the first Test against New Zealand, always threatening, once knocking Nick Gubbins to the dirt. But it was Fergus O’Neill who had Hampshire in trouble, removing the top four.
Gloucestershire’s struggles continued against Northants, Worcestershire collapsed against Lancashire and Derbyshire’s Ben Aitchison pocketed a five-fer against fragile Middlesex.
A hundred for Jonny Bairstow!
Crack, there it is! He tears off his helmet and still-ginger hair shining like a candle, lifts both arms in the air and to the dressing room. A first hundred as Yorkshire captain, and a 17th for Yorkshire.
Sated fans are now packing up their bags, walking down the aisles and heading home.
