Lavrov will visit New York to participate in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit New York, where he will take part in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

On the eve of the minister's visit to New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that this high-level week will take place in conditions of increasing turbulence in world affairs, which is caused by the aggravation of global challenges, the increase in the number of conflict spots and the intensification of crisis phenomena in the global economy.

At the same time, the participation of the Russian delegation in the high-level week was overshadowed by the US refusal to issue a visa to Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Alimov.

On the sidelines of the UN week, Lavrov is expected to take part in multilateral events and hold a number of bilateral meetings, including with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The minister previously said that at the meeting he would ask Rubio about Washington’s position on Ukraine and mediation efforts.

In recent days, the situation has been aggravated by the adoption in the United States of a law on new anti-Russian sanctions. The document allows US President Donald Trump to impose additional duties of up to 100% on goods from countries that are among the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as additional duties of up to 500% on Russian goods imported into the United States.

Lavrov will speak from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly on Saturday, September 26.

As the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, previously reported, the speech will highlight in detail Russian approaches to the most pressing problems of our time, assess the current activities of the World Organization, and also present proposals for restoring the position of the UN and its authority.

She added that in general, at upcoming events at the UN, the Russian delegation will focus, among other things, on strengthening the foundations of multipolarity, building an architecture of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia, and countering colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.

The topics of fair reform of the global financial architecture, consolidation of international efforts in the fight against terrorism and strengthening equal cooperation in the field of human rights protection will also be discussed.
