Massive attack on Kyiv and the region: at least 16 people were killed

On Thursday night, the Russian military launched a massive attack on Kyiv and the region with missiles and drones. At least 16 people were killed, half of them in the Solomensky district of the Ukrainian capital, where the strike hit a nine-story residential building.

Friday, August 21, has been declared a day of mourning in Kyiv. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported a combined strike “on military industry enterprises, transport and logistics centers and warehouses” in Kyiv and the region.

The massive attack began shortly before midnight and continued until the morning.

“As a result of a massive enemy attack on Kyiv, damage was recorded in three districts of the city: Svyatoshinsky, Solomensky and Darnitsky,” wrote the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaliy Klitschko on social networks.

In the Solomensky district of Kyiv, according to him, as a result of the strike, the upper floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed, a fire started there, and it was extinguished by morning. In addition, the buildings of a school and a children's clinic were damaged.

People were blocked in two residential buildings and in a school shelter, the State Emergency Service in Kyiv said. By morning, two people were rescued from the rubble.

In the Solomensky district, according to Klitschko, at least seven people died.

Another district of Kyiv, Goloseevsky, came under a drone attack on Thursday evening - Russian troops attacked a business center. As a result, a person died and there were injuries, Klitschko said.

In the Svyatoshinsky district, which was attacked on Thursday night, a fire engulfed warehouses and destroyed buildings in non-residential areas.

Non-residential and warehouse premises were also damaged in the Darnitsky district.

Part of Kyiv was left without electricity at night. By morning, according to the energy company DTEK, it was possible to restore power to 50 thousand households in Kyiv, while another 40 thousand remained without electricity.

In the Kyiv region, as the head of the regional administration Timur Tkachenko said, one person died - in the Brovary district. Another person was injured.

In the Boryspil region, six people were injured, four of them were hospitalized.

“As a result of the attack in the Boryspil region, 14 private houses, four warehouse buildings, a gas station, a high-rise building and eight cars were damaged,” Tkachenko said.

According to Prime Minister of Ukraine Sergei Koretsky, in Boryspil the blow hit food warehouses and Red Cross facilities.

“Unfortunately, while Moscow is investing in ballistic weapons and escalating the conflict, the world community’s response to such attacks is not always adequate. And as long as Ukraine does not have enough missile defense systems, Russia will not seriously think about peace,” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky commented on the night attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported a strike “on military industry enterprises, a transport and logistics center and warehouses in the city of Kyiv and the Kyiv region.” The department said that the Fire Point enterprise, the Ukrspetssystems warehouse and the Antonov State Enterprise, which, according to the Ministry of Defense, produce drones and components for drones and missiles, were hit in Kyiv.
