17-year-old girl dead after sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta

A 17-year-old girl has been killed and two have been seriously injured after a man armed with a sword entered the Brinell School in Fagersta.

The police were alerted at 2:06 p.m. and at 2:16 p.m. one of the patrols on the scene announced that a suspect had been neutralized by active fire. The man was shot in the leg, according to Aftonbladet's information.

The arrested man is 18 years old and can be linked to two addresses in Fagersta. According to information to SVT, he is a former student at the school.

The condition of the seriously injured, two boys under the age of 18, is described as difficult but stable. Another boy suffered minor injuries and has been released from hospital.

Fagersta municipality and Region Västmanland have gone into staff mode. A crisis center has been opened in Risbrohallen.

The police now state that the perpetrator was not shot during the operation at Brinell School on Friday. A shot, however, is said to have been fired - but did not hit the suspect. Of which the 18-year-old was not in need of medical care.

- I have no information that the suspected perpetrator should have been hit by shots, says Stefan Larsson, press spokesperson for police region Mitt.

The police did not want to elaborate on what kind of shot was fired - such as whether it was a warning shot.

The Brinell School in Fagersta is locked, says Åsa-Märta Sjöström (S), chairperson of the municipal board. She states that they have no information about how the suspected perpetrator got into the school during the attack.

Brinell School has previously been subjected to threats. - It is currently assessed that the threat that was earlier this spring is not connected to this, says Åsa-Märta Sjöström.

Several valley municipalities are now supporting Fagersta. - It's a terrible event, says Niklas Sjödin who is head of communications at Smedjebacken municipality.

In the municipality of Smedjebacken, the Church and recreational facilities are open. Many students in the municipality attend the current high school.

The Avesta and Hedemora municipal councils are canceling campaign days to go down to the candle lighting in Fagersta. - We were also supposed to have a campaign day today, but we are canceling it as a result of what happened in Fagersta and lighting candles instead, says Blerta Krenzi (S).
