Wastewater data reveals levels of COVID-19 spread in the United States

The center indicated that emergency department visits related to Covid-19 are still very low, but wastewater data reveal more accurate indicators of the spread of the virus in communities, as it can detect signs of infection even in people who do not show symptoms.

Wastewater data show that the states of Hawaii and Mississippi record moderate levels of viral activity, while the states of the West and South, such as Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, and Washington, witness low levels, while the rest of the states are classified as very low, with Covid-19 significantly outperforming the influenza and respiratory syncytial viruses in its spread.

It is expected that an updated vaccine targeting the dominant XFG variant will be available starting in the fall, as part of ongoing efforts to combat the virus and reduce the impact of repeated waves.
