3 arrests in 19-year-old 'mummy body' murder

On August 1, 2007, a freezer was found in the courtyard of a detached house located on 4537 Street in Bahçe Mahallesi of Akdeniz district, inside a building surrounded by bricks and plastered with concrete. When the refrigerator, which was lying on its side, was opened, a male body wrapped in a rug was found, and upon examination, it was determined that the body belonged to 49-year-old Bahaddin Sefer. After the death of Sefer, who was found to have a fracture in his head and a sharp object injury on his neck, the case remained unsolved.

SIMULTANEOUS OPERATIONS TO 6 ADDRESSES

Within the scope of the file that was re-examined by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Provincial Police Department Public Order Branch Directorate Homicide Bureau teams started working. As a result of the technical and physical surveillance carried out within the scope of the crime of 'deliberate killing with premeditated and monstrous feelings', a simultaneous operation was carried out on the morning of October 30 at 6 addresses determined in Batman, Izmir, Aydın, Yozgat and Sivas, centered in Mersin. During the operation, Hikmet Ş., Hadi Y., Ahmet İ., Bektaş Ş., Özlem Ş. and Ayşe E. were taken into custody.

DETAILS ARE REVEALED

Suspect statements included in the investigation file also revealed details about how the murder was committed. According to the statements, at around 23:00 on the night of the incident, Bahaddin Sefer, Hikmet Ş., Süleyman K. and Hadi Y. drank alcohol together at the victim's house. Meanwhile, Süleyman K. approached Sefer from behind and hit him on the head with an iron rod. While Süleyman K. and Hadi Y. attacked Sefer, who fell to the ground, Hikmet Ş., who was a plasterer. He cut the victim's throat with the knife in his hand. Realizing that Sefer had died, the suspects wrapped the body in a rug and removed the refrigerator cover at home. The suspects, who tried to place the body inside the freezer by tilting it on its side, were unsuccessful due to the victim's large build, and cut off his legs. It was stated that they placed the body in the freezer in this way. It was determined that the suspects, who wanted to eliminate the traces of the murder, carried the freezer to the courtyard of the house, poured concrete into it, surrounded it with bricks, and plastered it to make it look like a cedar that could be used to sit on.

3 SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED

6 suspects, whose statements were completed at the police station, were sent to the courthouse. Among the suspects who were brought to court, Hikmet Ş., Hadi Y. and Ahmet İ. were arrested and sent to prison. It was reported that judicial control sentences were imposed on the other 3 suspects.
